5 Winter Activities To Do In The Soo

Don’t let Mother Nature’s cold temperatures and snow squalls get the best of you. Get outside and enjoy the natural beauty that the Algoma District has to offer!

Whether you like the thrill of downhill skiing, getting together with some friends for a game of hockey, or spending the afternoon on a leisure snowshoe, Sault Ste. Marie and its great outdoors has something for everyone!

1. Outdoor Rinks

The Soo has a reputation as being one of the best hockey towns in Canada, and our outdoor rinks are proof of that. Children and players of all ages can be found honing their skills on rinks in and around the Soo all winter long.

Grab your skates, stick, and toque, and head over to the Anna McCrea Rink, Merrifield Rink, or the Esposito Rink for some fun. If you’d prefer to skate without the stick and puck, the Art Jennings Oval and the rink at Silver Creek Golf Course have just what you are looking for.

More information on the city’s rinks can be found here.

2. Skiing

Just 45 minutes North of Sault Ste. Marie is Searchmont Resort. Searchmont is perfect for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and skill levels, with 18 runs ranging from the beginner’s bunny hill to the legendary Moose Difficult. Rentals are available on-site for those without their own gear, as well as, lessons for beginners and youngsters. Check out their website for everything you need to know about the hill, including hours of operation and daily ski conditions.

If you prefer x-country skiing then you should check out the trails at the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club. Click here for more information on the club and its beautiful 35km trail system located in the Hiawatha Highlands.

Safety Tip: When skiing, always remember to dress for the conditions. Even if the temperature starts to warm up, the wind and sun can cause serious burns on your face. Wearing a helmet is also a smart decision, especially if you decide to try and catch some big air.

3. Snowmobiling

Another benefit of living in Northern Ontario is having some of the best snowmobile trails in the world right in our backyard! This year has been exceptional thanks to the amount of snow we’ve received. The local trail systems can take you almost anywhere in the north and are full of great landscapes that aren’t accessible by car. Click here for more information about snowmobiling in the North.

Safety Tip: If you’re heading out for a ride, always dress warmly, carry a cellphone, and let someone know where you’re going. Remember to check the ice thickness before heading out onto frozen lakes or ponds, and especially rivers where water tends to move fast.

For those who’d rather watch the action, the CSRA is bringing a full weekend of snowcross racing to The Yard in Sault Ste Marie Feb 4-5. For more information, click here.

4. Snowshoeing

Take advantage of the beauty of Algoma District by snowshoeing through the snow, across hills, trails and frozen creeks. Most of the area’s popular hiking trails should be accessible by snowshoes, offering a completely different experience than in other seasons.

Trails and rental snowshoes are available at Hiawatha Highlands, or at Stokely Creek lodge located North of the city.

Don’t forget about the hub trail that offers stunning views and challenging terrain without having to leave the city!

5. Bon Soo

A Sault Ste. Marie tradition since 1964, Bon Soo has grown to become the second-largest winter carnival in Canada. Running over the course of 10 days, from Feb 3rd to 12th, the 2017 edition of the festival will include popular events such as the opening night fireworks, Sno Spike outdoor volleyball tournament, polar bear swim, Winter Playground and Bum Slides.

We are the proud sponsor of the Bum Slides this year! Bring your family and friends to one of Bon Soo’s favourites, we would love to see you there!
